September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this month we are shining the spotlight on Tracy Rode, a thyroid cancer survivor and PearlPoint’s Director of Client Services. Tracy’s survivorship provides a unique perspective and special understanding of our clients. She brings boundless passion and energy to her role and we are proud to have her on our team!
Question: What do you find most gratifying about your work at PearlPoint?
Tracy: We are willing and able to be a resource for those who don’t know where else to turn, whether it’s a newly diagnosed patient, a frazzled caregiver, or a healthcare provider who lacks just the right resource to answer a patient’s question. It means a lot to me that we never turn anyone away without trying to help as much as we can.
Question: What about working with those impacted by cancer led you to PearlPoint?
Tracy: I had always been passionate about and active in cancer nonprofits, but my own diagnosis clarified a career path for me that I’d put into the “what I’d REALLY like to do is . . . ” file. I wanted to work for an organization that recognizes how powerful information is to someone who’s facing cancer. PearlPoint truly gets that.
Question: September is Thyroid Cancer Survivor Month; as a survivor what piece of advice would you share with those just diagnosed?
Tracy: First and foremost, know that every individual’s experience with cancer is completely unique; don’t weigh your cancer against someone else’s. Let yourself feel the emotions associated with a new diagnosis, then find ways to use cancer as a catalyst for positive change. Learn to say, “Yes, thank you, I’d appreciate a casserole,” or to ask for specific help.
Question: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life?
Tracy: I’ve learned that there’s humor and joy in almost every situation, if you let yourself be open to finding it.
