Mission Moment: Nutrition Support for Pancreatic Cancer

By PearlPoint Nutrition Services October 28, 2013Pearls of Wisdom Blog

As part of his treatment for pancreatic cancer Larry learned he would need a Whipple procedure. A Whipple procedure involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder, and part of the bile duct. His nurse navigator had stressed that due to the location and extensiveness of the surgery, nutrition would be very important to healing after the surgery. Larry was unsure how to prepare and what to expect afterwards. That is when he contacted PearlPoint Cancer Support for help.

Larry spoke with one of PearlPoint’s registered dietitians to discuss the importance of good nutrition both before and after a Whipple procedure. Our dietitian explained pancreatic cancer takes quite a toll on the body in terms of diet and nutrition. She shared important nutrition guidelines following a Whipple procedure. Our dietitian also stressed the value of good nutrition prior to surgery for a better outcome.
