Mission Moment: Nutrition Support Before and After Treatment

By PearlPoint Nutrition Services February 11, 2013Pearls of Wisdom Blog

Our mission at The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation is to create a more confident cancer journey for adults anytime, anywhere. But what does that mission look like in action?

For Jerry, a more confident cancer journey meant minimizing the potential side effects of his thyroid cancer treatment as well as creating a nutrition plan for healthy survivorship following treatment.

Jerry’s treatment for thyroid cancer required him to stop taking thyroid hormone replacement for three weeks. This situation typically causes fatigue and weight gain. In order to combat these side effects, Jerry reached out to The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. Our staff of registered dietitians was able to provide Jerry with ways to minimize impact including an eating plan and diet suggestions to help him maintain his energy level and boost his metabolism.

Jerry only gained pound and was able to continue regular activities throughout the three weeks of treatment preparation. Jerry continues to follow the healthy eating recommendations of our dietitians and is currently working on a survivorship nutrition plan with our team. Using the same tactics employed during his treatment, Jerry is focusing on eating smaller, more frequent meals that are high in fiber and protein.

Without support, cancer can be an overwhelming experience. The cancer journey can often be filled with unexpected and frustrating side effects both before and after treatment. With our support, adults like Jerry have access to knowledgeable and compassionate professionals, free of charge, who empower them in their journey.
