Mission Moment: Help Navigating Unexpected Complications from Cancer Treatment

By PearlPoint Nutrition Services February 25, 2013Pearls of Wisdom Blog

Our mission at The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation is to create a more confident cancer journey for adults anytime, anywhere. But what does that mission look like in action?

For Stephen, a more confident cancer journey meant help navigating the side effects of his treatment for multiple myeloma and unexpected conditions caused by the disease.

Stephen, who was in treatment for multiple myeloma, experienced some unexpected delays in healing after undergoing an oral surgery unrelated to his cancer. Because of the way multiple myeloma affects the blood, patients often experience protein depletion, which in turn can impact the body’s ability to heal normally. Consequently, Stephen had to temporarily cease his oral chemo regimen to heal from the oral surgery. That is when he got in touch with our team for help navigating the side effects of his cancer and its treatment.

Our team was able to consult with Stephen via email, as a phone call would have been difficult for him to manage given his oral complications. Our registered dietitians provided free samples and coupons for liquid supplements and helped Stephen and his caregiver understand the importance of high-protein food choices during his treatment. As a result of his consultations with our Supportive Services staff, Stephen was able to raise his protein levels and had a follow-up oral surgery needed for wound healing.

Without support, cancer can be an overwhelming experience. The cancer journey can often be filled with unexpected physical conditions. With our support, adults like Stephen have access to knowledgeable and compassionate professionals, whenever and how ever it is convenient for them.
