When facing a cancer diagnosis in addition to other health complications, a survivor is likely to have even more questions about how to best navigate cancer and treatment. Sue, who is in her 70’s, was recently diagnosed with metastatic colorectal cancer. She also has diabetes and a history of high blood pressure. While Sue was not experiencing many side effects from her initial chemotherapy treatments, her doctor recommended she contact PearlPoint for a preventive consultation.
When speaking to our registered dietitian, Sue confessed she did not know what side effects she might face as a diabetic undergoing chemotherapy. She was concerned about getting proper nutrition and wondered if she could continue drinking diabetic liquid nutrition supplements daily throughout treatment.
Our dietitian discussed possible side effects with Sue, along with some tips on how to manage them. She talked with Sue about the importance of adequate protein intake and weight maintenance during treatment. Our dietitian also encouraged Sue to talk to her doctor about drinking the nutrition supplement and provided recipes for healthy meal options to consider.
About 10-20% of people diagnosed with cancer also have diabetes. PearlPoint Cancer Support is here to help guide any adult through their cancer journey. If you or someone you know is facing cancer, contact us today.
