How Can You Help When a Loved One Has Cancer?

By PearlPoint Nutrition Services June 26, 2013Pearls of Wisdom Blog

For many of us, each day progresses in much the same way as the one before it. Life takes on a comfortable routine, filled with meetings, electric bills, and traffic jams. We barely have enough time and energy to worry about our own lives, families, and problems and all too often, the issues affecting other people get pushed to the wayside, for some day in the future.

Sadly, a cancer diagnosis changes so much of life’s normal routine, and it can be difficult to know how to help someone you know who has been affected by cancer. There are many ways, small and large, to support a cancer survivor and help to ease the burden of their diagnosis. Offering to take over regular errands that may be interrupted by treatments, like picking kids up from school, doing yard work, or walking the dog, make a big impact. If you’re a good cook, check out our recipes section and bring by dinner when you visit, or on holidays. Often, infusion treatments are long and can be lonely. Offer to stop by and visit during treatment, or make a point to send an email when you know its treatment day.

If you’re looking to make an even bigger impact, there are many organizations where you can volunteer and work directly with cancer patients. Donating your time and expertise are tangible ways to make your community a better place and to have a positive impact on the lives of people just like you. It is a small thank you for the blessings you have received and an opportunity to pass those blessings on.

You can also help by making a contribution to organizations committed to supporting cancer survivors, like PearlPoint Cancer Support. With your gift, we will provide supportive services, nutrition counseling, and medically vetted cancer information to adults impacted by cancer. Together, we can make their cancer journey easier. Join us with a special recurring gift to honor and remember a loved one affected by cancer.
